Reuters) - Barnes & Noble Inc is launching a video streaming and download service this autumn for its Nook e-books and device business in the latest volley in its battle to keep up with Amazon.com Inc.

Barnes & Noble, the largest U.S. bookstore chain, said on Tuesday the Nook video service will allow shoppers to buy movies and television shows from Time Warner Inc's HBO; Viacom Inc; Sony Pictures Home Entertainment; and Walt Disney Studios. It will announce other studio partnerships soon, it said.

The company, whose Nook tablets and e-readers have found favor with shoppers, faces intense competition from Amazon, which already offers the Prime Instant Video service that offers videos for purchase, and makes the Kindle Fire tablet.

Amazon also has a subscription service linked to Prime, which offers free two-day shopping service within the United States and costs $79 a year.

Earlier this month, Amazon signed a three-year deal with Hollywood studio Epix that will add thousands of movies to Amazon's video streaming library.

Adding videos is necessary for the Nook devices to keep pace with Amazon's Kindle devices, which are used by customers to shop not only for books and entertainment but for a wide array of products on its website. That gives the online retailer an enormous advantage over Barnes & Noble.

"Unfortunately for Barnes & Noble, a bookstore, they're going to eventually have to sell everything in order to make their devices competitive," Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey said in an interview.

Barnes & Noble's Nook devices, which McQuivey said are better than Kindles in some instances, have allowed the bookseller to win as much as 30 percent of the U.S. e-books market, according to its own estimates.

The Nook Video service will launch in the United States this autumn, and in the United Kingdom, where Barnes & Noble will start selling Nook devices, also this autumn - in time for the holiday season.

Videos that are streamed and downloaded from Barnes & Noble's Nook store will be stored in the Nook Cloud. Video content can be watched on Nook devices as well as other devices once Barnes & Noble launches a free application.

(Reuters) - Alibaba Group, China's biggest e-commerce firm, will spin off the team developing its Aliyun mobile operating system, which Google Inc claims uses aspects of its own mobile operating system Android.

Alibaba Group will invest $200 million in the spin-off as the team developing the mobile operating system expands, said founder and chief executive Jack Ma in an internal memo on Thursday.

The Aliyun mobile operating system hit a snag last week when a planned smartphone launch in Shanghai with Taiwan's Acer Inc was cancelled due to what Alibaba said was interference from Google.

At the heart of the issue was Aliyun, which Alibaba said was self-developed but Google said contained aspects of Android.

China's smartphone market is expected to top the United States as the world's largest smartphone market this year. Earlier in the week, Alibaba said it bought back half the stake Yahoo Inc owned in the company for about $7.6 billion.

(Reuters) - New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning delivered another razor sharp performance, and running back Andre Brown ran in a pair of touchdowns, as the defending Super Bowl champions steamrolled the Carolina Panthers 36-7 in Charlotte on Thursday.

Manning, who threw for a career-best 510 yards and three touchdowns against Tampa Bay on Sunday, completed 27 passes for 288 yards and a touchdown before being relieved by backup David Carr in the fourth quarter as the Giants improved to 2-1.

Manning, last season's Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, outshone NFL rookie of the year Cam Newton, who had a tough time against the Giants defense, completing 16 of 30 passes for 242 yards with three interceptions as the Panthers fell to 1-2.

While New York kept the dynamic Newton in check, holding the slippery quarterback to just six yards rushing on six carries and one touchdown, Manning shredded the Carolina defense and manufactured points from the Giants' first four possessions.

New York took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards in eight plays, Manning firing a 14-yard touchdown strike to Martellus Bennett as the Panthers allowed their opponent to score on the opening drive for the third consecutive game.

"We talked about getting a fast start, jump out to a lead," Manning told reporters. "Get the ball, go 80 yards for a touchdown, that was a great start.

"It set the tempo for the whole game and we kept it going."

Lawrence Tynes booted a 47-yard field goal to give the visitors a 10-0 first quarter advantage and the Giants kept up the pace in the second, scoring on their first possession when Brown barreled over from a yard out and Tynes kicked a 49 yarder to make it 20-0 at halftime.

Brown, getting his first start in place of injured Ahmad Bradshaw, ran for a career high 113 yards on 20 carries.

The second half was more of the same, the Giants capitalizing on a Panthers turnover to go 23-0 ahead with a 30-yard Tynes field goal.

The Panthers offense finally let loose and Newton led a 13-play drive before diving over for a touchdown from the one yard line.

Tynes was on target again with a 36-yard field goal to pad New York's lead to 26-7 entering the final quarter.

In the fourth, Brown ran in another one-yard touchdown and Tynes completed the rout with a 27-yard kick, his fifth field goal of the game.

"We played well but settled for too many field goals maybe," said Manning. "But we had a good game plan and ran the ball really well.

"When we can run the ball everything starts clicking."
