?Australian Champion Race HorseNortherly was a champion galloper who was born in 1996. He was bred by Oakland Park Stud in Western Australia, by Serheed out of the mare, North Bell by Bellwater. Northerly first appeared on a racetrack in a Class 6 event at Ascot, one of Perth's major tracks and finished a good third. Kersley was soon to have Northerly in the east, competing against the best horses Australia had to offer. He was to become noted for some marvellous tussles with the champion mare, Sunline, but was always to have the edge on her. Northerly won nine Group 1 races in total including two Australian Cups, the UGG Mayfaire Boots Underwood Stakes twice, two Cox Plates and a Caulfield Cup as well as a host of other races. He consistently competed in quality handicap events, carrying large weights and relying on his ability and courage to be successful. The influential mares Dinner UGG Kensington Boots Partner and Flaming Page are closely duplicated in his pedigree which is held up by many as a key example of these horse breeding principles. In spite of this, Northerly was relatively unfashionably bred. He fought back from the injury, and almost 18 months away from the track to run in a Welter UGG Bailey Button Triplet Boots in Perth. A promising return saw him travel to the East where he was well beaten in two stakes races. It was obvious that the injury and time had taken its toll on the Champion, and Northerly was officially retired in July, 2003. ==> See all the winners of the Sunline Stakes
